The Early Days of South Lyon

This beloved community was founded in 1832 and was originally called Thompson’s Corners.

But in that same year, the surrounding township was named Lyon after Lucius Lyon, a member of the state government.

As a result, South Lyon was ultimately given its present day name in 1873 when it was incorporated as a village. It was made into a city in 1930.

Over the years, growth was supported by the three rail lines that passed through South Lyon. Although these rail lines are nowhere near the same level of operations, South Lyon does still host the CSX main line from Detroit to Grand Rapids.
